From Binge-Watching To Binge Snoozing

When was the last time I watched a Netflix series or a web movie? This question crossed my mind recently. Suddenly I realized that it had been quite a while since I had watched a movie or a show on Netflix or any other online platform.

The last show that really intrigued me was `Lincoln Lawyers’. This was around six months ago and I had my fair share of enjoyment and contentment from watching a superb show.

Wish they produced more like these!

My previous history of seeing some excellent web series in the past 2 to 3 years, included — Queen’s Gambit, Mare of Easttown, House of Cards, Squid Game Inventing Anna, and some other Indian shows.

I completely enjoyed binge-watching them. But the past six months have been dismal.

Exploring Reasons for This Recent Waning Interest

Reflecting on this phenomenon, it was unusual for a person who was fond of movies and a fan of Netflix to be off it!

Could this be attributed to a phase that I might be going through? A period of personal growth, prioritizing other aspects of my life, or finding fulfillment in different activities.

Am I stressed, fatigued, or preoccupied? If this is so, I hope that it is a passing phase. It is true that my interest level in sitting through a three or more hour-long show has plummeted, owing to a lack of motivation to invest time in exploring new series.

I wonder whether it is a natural Netflix detox that I had not asked for!

Out of boredom and looking for a change, lately I have started exploring new pastimes.

I have transitioned to YouTube and enjoy watching live videos on travel, lifestyle, fashion, food, self-help, and motivation. These short clips I find more engaging, and are quick forms of stress busters.

I am sure many of you will agree, that the quality of movies being churned out nowadays has deteriorated. Isn’t there a lack of compelling content related to theme, originality, or diversity? Resulting in a disconnect between current narratives that resonate with my interests and values, impacting my enthusiasm for media consumption.

Additionally, the sheer volume of content available today is overwhelming, leading to decision fatigue. The elaborate list of shows that appear on the screen as soon as you browse Netflix is mindboggling and confusing.

Choosing the best is tough. Often I start watching a particular show, after a few minutes feel it is not up to the mark and switch to another. The latter is hardly any better!

It is true that the only constant is change. I am still trying to figure out whether this ` Netflix chill’ is a temporary phase or a more endearing shift in my interests and entertainment preferences, influenced by various factors.
