The fervor and enthusiasm with which festivals are celebrated in India is incomparable, throwing light on a country endowed with a rich culture and varied traditions. Apart from their religious significance, people look forward to festivals every year as a time of celebrations and socializing. For children and working people, it means a long holiday and enjoyment.
It’s that time of the year here in India that is marked by festivities and celebrations, extending over a period of ten days. It is the festival of `Dusshera’ also known as Vijayadashami. On the nine days, different forms of the female Goddess `Shakti’ are worshipped, symbolizing female power.
This is also a time for contemplation, where the deity’s energies are invoked, vanquishing our inner demons and elevating us to a fearless and evolved higher state of who we are.
Along with adhering to the customs, the spiritual air is invigorating, it’s a period of rejoicing — dancing, singing, and food galore. Each of the nine days is also synonymous with a particular color and it’s interesting to dress up in those colors.
Streets are illuminated, and embellished and fairs are organized. At the same time, tableaus representing stories from our ancient epics keep zealous crowds enthralled. Skits and dance dramas are conducted, showcasing a plethora of talent, encouraging people to enjoy together, promoting unity, harmony, and joy!
As a special reverence, people fast and visit temples. Though celebrated in diverse ways in various regions of the country, and known by different names, the essence of the festival is the same — the victory of good over evil, light over darkness.
Wishing everyone a very Happy Dusshera!
