From admiring the majestic building of the Taj Palace Hotel (the first ever five-star hotel in India) on an occasional visit to Mumbai, imagining its ultra-luxurious interiors and all the high-profile guests staying there, giving wings to the idea of being in its precincts some day, to actually staying at this iconic, grand hotel saw the fulfillment of my wish recently.
Overlooking the majestic Gateway of India and the Arabian Sea harbor, the hotel is a striking blend of nostalgic elegance, rich history, and modern facilities, which I got to experience at close quarters.
My Stay and Experience
The rich, eclectically done-up lobby was abuzz with activities. We were greeted with a customary welcome—the first taste of Taj warmth and hospitality, which I was not new to! The Taj group is acknowledged as the world leader in hospitality, and it gives me immense pride.
A combination of its dazzling interiors, the lingering subtle fragrance in the air, and its staff forging a personal rapport with their guests immediately lifts the mood as you arrive.
Taking a tour of the huge property the next morning led me through chic shopping arcades with designer, international brands, an exotic sea-facing restaurant and cafe, a swimming pool ensconced in a huge courtyard resplendent with plants and greenery, and marble, pillared porches. The entire aura was mind-blowing!
Touching Upon It’s History
The first Taj hotel opened in Mumbai, then Bombay, more than a century ago. Resembling a palace, not just from its magnificent exteriors but the plush, ornate interiors as well. This legendary hotel has played host to kings, dignitaries, and eminent personalities from across the globe. evidence of which can be seen in memorabilia albums with signatures and photographs displayed in its corridors. Even our country’s (India's) post-partition meeting of ministers was held here.
Perfect Location
Situated in Mumbai’s prime historical and commercial hub, the Taj Mahal Palace is within walking distance of the Colaba Causeway, known for its touristry, tiny roadside shops. I could catch glimpses of the bustling streets and the harbor's lineup of sailing boats from my beautifully filigreed balcony.
I wouldn’t say that I saw the best views, but that was alright. Who would want to spend time in the room when you are in such a splendid place?!! There was so much to see and do here, and our schedule was packed!
Additionally, it is near the flourishing art and heritage precincts with must-visit museums, art galleries, and churches.
The entire scenario transported me to the era of the black-and-white movies, sometimes aired on television, that I watched growing up, considering Mumbai is the center of the Indian film industry.
The Taj Palace is nothing short of a masterpiece—a finely crafted work of art!! You could write a short novel about this Instagram-worthy hotel!
A stay here reminded me of ancient palaces in our country (we have so many beautiful palaces, especially in Rajasthan) and the times of royalty. Obviously, with all the modern amenities and exquisitely done-up (from the antique decor pieces to paintings and furniture).
It has a certain timelessness that is difficult to put down in words!
